4C. Marissa Lawton’s notes: Katie Doman

Clients: Katie Doman (16)

Case history: Katie’s best friend Jenny (16) went missing six months ago and has not been seen since; referral to service via personal request.

Session 1

I explained what counselling was about and how the sessions would work.  I talked about the services available to families and friends of missing persons.

Katie did not speak.  She was dressed in clothes that her parents tell me are the same as Jenny Cleaver’s, and apparently has cut and coloured her hair in a similar style to Jenny.  When I mentioned Jenny, she looked away briefly but otherwise did not respond to questions.

Agreed plan of action: Another session on Friday.

Session 2

Katie remains silent and uncommunicative.  I tried to get her to talk about her interests, or her studies, but she didn’t want to talk.  We sat in silence for the remainder of the session.

Session 3

Katie still refuses to talk.  I asked whether she would be willing to complete some exercises if she didn’t feel ready to talk yet.  The exercises are designed to help her explore her feelings.

Agreed plan of action: Katie to take away exercises and consider completing them.

Ah! It’s a good sign she agreed to do that. 🙂

Ms. Lawton is a very patient person.

    • Rad says:

Well, it’s her job to be patient, and Katie’s not the first silent client she’s ever encountered. Marissa is a pro, if anyone can get through, she can.

I wonder if Ms. Lawton opening up about herself would help Katie maybe feel more comfortable and open up to her. But I see that she is warming up in this session.

    • Rad says:

Well, that’s not really what counsellors do, or at least not to a massive extent. But we’ll see how it all plays out.
